School's Out! How Can Families Make the Most of Summer Break?
The last day of school is a big deal!
Backpacks get put away for the last time, kids start making plans, and suddenly there is a sense of freedom that has been missing for months.
For parents, though, that excitement is often followed by another realization: the kids are home now.
All day.
Every day.
And before long, someone is going to say, the dreaded "I'm bored."
The good news is that summer does not have to be “social media perfect” or packed with expensive trips, camps, or a perfectly planned schedule to be memorable. The simple things are what everyone will remember the most.
Here are a few ways to make the most of summer break without putting more pressure on yourself.
Make a Summer Bucket List, But Keep It Simple
There is something exciting about having a list of adventures waiting for you.
Sit down with your kids and find out what ideas they have for their Summer Break. Building a fort, splash pads, going to the beach, water balloon fights - put it all down in writing!
The goal is not to check off everything. It’s simply to have a collection of their ideas ready for those days when nobody knows what to do.
The anticipation is half the fun, the other half is checking activities off the list!
Let Kids Be Kids
During the school year, life is structured. There are schedules, homework, activities, and responsibilities.
Summer offers freedom and gives the kids space and time to play. Not organized play. Not adult directed play. Just play.
Running through the yard, making up games. Climbing, swinging, exploring, building, and imagining - these moments may look simple, but they are often where confidence, creativity, and independence grow!
Create One Summer Tradition
When kids look back on summer, they usually don’t remember every single day. They remember the things that happened again and again.
Maybe it is Friday night popsicles or a family walk after dinner.
Maybe it is movie night in the backyard.
It doesn’t have to be elaborate, in fact, the simplest traditions are often the ones that are the most memorable for them.
Expect a Little Mess
With all the fun, Summer also has a way of being messy.
There will be wet towels on the floor, dirty feet coming through the house, and grass stains that appear on everything.
It’s all part of the fun, and some of the best summer days end with tired kids, messy clothes, and stories to tell at the dinner table.
Leave Room for Slow Days
Not every day needs an activity, not every hour needs a plan.
Some days are meant for reading books on the couch, sitting outside with a snack, or watching the clouds roll by. There is value in slowing down, especially after a busy school year.
Sometimes the most memorable moments happen when nothing special was planned at all.
A Summer Worth Remembering
Summer does not have to be perfect to be special.
The trips, activities, and special outings are great, but so are the plain, ordinary moments. The backyard adventures, the family bike rides, and the evenings spent outside a little longer because nobody wants the day to end.
At Bolder Play, we believe childhood is built through movement, imagination, and connection. We hope your family finds plenty of all three this summer!
