How Can You Make Easter More Fun (and Less Sugar-Fueled) for Kids?

One of those holidays that children look forward to is Easter, and really, who can blame them? It's a really fun day with candy, egg hunts, and surprises!

However, if you've ever dealt with the fallout from consuming so much sugar, you know it can quickly turn from enjoyable to chaotic very quickly.

What if we added a bit more movement, creativity, and connection this year while maintaining all the excitement?

Here are a few simple ways to make Easter feel just as special, without it being all about the candy.

1. Turn Your Egg Hunt Into an Adventure

Instead of the usual run-and-grab egg hunt, try slowing it down and making it more of an experience.

You could:

  • Add simple clues that lead to the next egg

  • Include fun challenges like “hop like a bunny to the fence” or “spin around before your next clue”

  • Hide eggs both inside and outside to keep things interesting

It keeps kids engaged longer and turns the hunt into something they’ll really remember.

2. Mix in Non-Candy Surprises

Candy is definitely part of the fun, but it does not have to be everything.

Try mixing in a few extras like:

  • Stickers or temporary tattoos

  • Small toys or fidget items

  • Sidewalk chalk

  • Little “coupons” for things like a movie night or extra playtime

It gives kids something to enjoy even after the treats are gone!

3. Add a Bunny Trail

If you have younger kids, this one is always a hit. Create a trail of bunny footprints that leads them from their room to their basket or the first egg.

You can use paper cutouts, chalk, or anything you have on hand. Add a few surprises along the way, and suddenly the morning feels a lot more magical.

4. Plan a Midday Movement Break

After the egg hunt and treats, kids usually have a lot of energy or they crash hard. A little movement in the middle of the day can help balance things out.

Keep it simple:

  • A backyard race

  • A quick obstacle course (for older kids, make it challenging with our Ninjaline Kit!)

  • A walk around the neighborhood

  • A game of tag or bunny hop races

It does not have to be anything fancy. Just getting outside and moving can reset everyone’s mood.

5. Let the Kids Take the Lead

Switch things up and let your kids be in charge for a bit!

They can:

  • Hide eggs for you or their siblings

  • Make up their own scavenger hunt

  • Create a silly challenge course

Kids love having a turn to be the planner, and it adds a whole new layer of fun.

6. Keep One Simple Tradition

It is easy to feel like you need to do everything, but you really do not.

Pick one small thing and stick with it each year:

  • Bunny-shaped pancakes in the morning

  • A family photo in the same spot

  • Reading the same Easter book together

Those simple traditions are often the ones kids remember most.

Easter Does Not Have to Be Over the Top

At the end of the day, kids do not need a perfect setup or a basket full of things. They just want to have fun and spend quality time with the people they love.

A few thoughtful activities, some fresh air, and a lot of laughter can make the day feel really special and be something you and your family will remember for years to come.

Happy Easter from all of us here at Bolder Play! 🐰
