How Can You Make Thanksgiving More Fun and Meaningful for Kids?

Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that
sounds magical—family, food, gratitude—but, for kids, it can feel like a whole lot of waiting. Waiting for food, waiting for the adults to finish talking, waiting for something (anything!) fun to happen.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

With just a little planning, you can turn Thanksgiving into a day your kids genuinely look forward to—one filled with movement, connection, and meaning (and yes, even some pie). Here are a few easy, low-pressure ideas to bring more joy to your family's holiday this year!

1. Start the Day with a “Turkey Trot” (Backyard-Style)

No need to wake up at 6 a.m. for an official race! Create your own family-style version right in your yard or local park. Set up a silly obstacle course using cones, chalk, or even your Bolder Play gear like the Playzone Fit Obstacle Course Race Set or Ninjaline for older kids.

Make it extra fun by handing out medals (a.k.a. paper circles with turkeys drawn on them) or letting the winner pick the movie for the evening.

2. Create a Thankful Tree or Tablecloth

Before everyone digs in, take a moment to reflect. Let the kids cut out paper leaves and write or draw something they’re thankful for. Tape them to a wall in the shape of a tree—or go even simpler and write messages directly on a brown paper table runner.

It’s a great way to involve kids in the spirit of the holiday while creating a tradition you can add to every year.

3. Designate a Kids’ Play Zone (Indoors or Out)

Kids need space to move. Set up a mini “play zone” where they can run, climb, and burn off energy while dinner is cooking. The Slackers Swingline or Dreamcatcher Swing are awesome options if you’ve got a backyard, while the StairSlide is perfect for indoor energy releases.

Pro tip: This gives the adults a much-needed breather, too.

4. Give Kids a Special Role at the Table

Even little kids love feeling helpful. Let them create place cards, fold napkins, or pass around rolls. You could even make a “kids' toast” where everyone shares one funny or sweet thing they love about Thanksgiving. It keeps them engaged and proud to contribute!

5. Add a Side of Games

Once the plates are cleared (or even while they’re being cleared), pull out a few favorite family games. Keep it simple with charades, freeze dance, or a quick scavenger hunt around the house or yard. Bonus points for any game that gets them moving or laughing!

6. End the Day with a Family Movie or Book Night

After all the excitement, wind down with a holiday movie or cozy read-aloud. Pile onto the couch with blankets and leftovers. It's the perfect way to ease into the evening while keeping the togetherness going.

Let Thanksgiving Be a Day They’ll Remember

You don’t need to overhaul your entire holiday or add extra stress to your plate. Just a few thoughtful activities—ones that bring movement, creativity, and gratitude into the day—can make Thanksgiving feel more inclusive and memorable for your kids.

Because when kids are having fun, feeling seen, and getting a chance to participate, everyone has a better holiday.
