5 Tips For Baking Tasty Sugar Cookies

First, baking the perfect batch of sugar cookies is fairly simple, but just in case you need some extra guidance, pay attention to these 5 baking tips.
  1. Chill the dough
  2. Use room temperature eggs
  3. Use pure vanilla extract
  4. Don’t over mix
  5. Remove cookies before they’re golden brown
  6. Sift the dry ingredients

Last tip? Bake with love. As silly as it might be, it’s not a myth. Food always tastes best when you’re thinking about the people you’re making it for and when you’re having fun with the people you love.

    Sugar Cookie Recipe

To begin, help your kids grab these ingredients from your fridge and pantry.

                 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
                 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
                 1/4 teaspoon salt
                 3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature, cut into small pieces
                 1 large egg
                 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Now that you have everything on your counter:

Place the flour, baking powder and salt into one bowl. Sift the flour until the dry mix looks like fresh snow.

Place the cubed butter and sugar in a bowl, and start mixing with an electric mixer on medium speed. ( You should probably do this part. If your kids want to help, tell them you’ll let them lick the spoon ) The mixture should be light and fluffy after 4-5 minutes.

In the same bowl, crack the egg and add the vanilla.

Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, and mix until you can’t see the flour.

Spoon the dough onto the counter, and divide in half. Pat each section into a 1/4 inch disc. Wrap in plastic, and place in refrigerator for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 350 degrees in the meantime.

After the dough is firm, place one disc between two pieces of parchment paper. Help your kids roll out the dough into a 1/8 inch sheet.

Now the FUN part! Go to the store before hand to let your kids pick the cookie cutters they like. Cut the dough into shapes, and position them onto a baking sheet with 2 inches of space between each one.

When the oven is preheated, throw the cookies in for 10-12 minutes until almost golden brown. Cool for a couple more minutes, and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Continue the process until the batch of cookies are done baking. Feel free to save the extra dough for another day if you don’t want to make them all in one go.
